Preparing for the holidays | part 1
The holiday season is upon us in full force. Whether you embrace the holidays or dread them, there is an extra layer of anxiety associated with this time of year. Regardless if it’s the pressure of gift-giving, family dynamics, or the expectations of having everything “perfect,” it’s important to take steps to reduce stress and anxiety.
Here are some practical strategies that might help:
Set reasonable expectations – People are exactly who they are regardless of the day. Don’t expect family or friends to be on “their best behavior” just because it is supposed to be a special day. And don’t let other people’s behavior ruin a day that is special to you.
Be adaptable – Plans made are sometimes plans broken. Maybe your child gets sick and you can’t get to the big family gathering, maybe there is inclement weather. Recognize what you can and cannot control in these situations and adjust accordingly instead of allowing outside circumstances to dictate your responses and emotions.
