Preparing for the holidays | part 2
The holiday season is upon us in full force. Whether you embrace the holidays or dread them, there is an extra layer of anxiety associated with this time of year. Regardless of if it’s the pressure of gift-giving, family dynamics, or the expectations of having everything “perfect,” it’s important to take steps to reduce stress and anxiety.
Here are some practical strategies that might help:Set boundaries – Learn to say “no” and be okay with it. You are in charge of your peace. Recognize when you have reached your emotional, physical, or financial limits.
Limit social media – Everyone is busy positing about their “perfect” holidays online and they may not be your experience. Remember that you are only seeing a snapshot of other people’s lives and comparison is a thief of joy. Try to stay in the present instead of distracting yourself with outside distractions.
Take time for yourself – What are your favorite things? What can you do to stay grounded and mindful this season? While you are busy doing things for everyone else, add yourself in to that list as well. Go for a walk, schedule a massage, meet up with a friend for lunch, listen to music, or set up an appointment with your therapist.
Lastly, work on finding the good. Gratitude is the best antidote to anxiety. Even if it is something small, being grateful helps to counteract those feelings of worry and self-deprecation. Sometimes you realize that you cannot change a situation but you do have the power to change the way you view the situation.
From all of us at The Practice, we wish you a kind and peaceful holiday season.
