suicide prevention month | part 3
There are some myths about suicide to be aware of as well.
People who talk about suicide are just seeking attention. This is just not true. Often, people who die by suicide have told a trusted person about not wanting to live anymore or that they don’t see a future for themselves.
People who take their own lives are selfish, cowards, or weak. People do not die of suicide by choice. Often, these individuals are experiencing significant emotional pain, or even pain from chronic medical issues. They have difficulty seeing a way out of their current situation, which can exacerbate depression, stress, anxiety, substance abuse, and mental health conditions.
Talk therapy and medications don’t work. Treatment can and does work. Suicide prevention can really begin in therapy and by getting treatment for mental health conditions. Finding the best treatment for you can take time, but the right treatment could save your life.
No one needs to go through thoughts of suicide alone. Help and resources are available for those seeking assistance.
