suicide prevention month | part 1

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text 988 immediately.

While prevention of suicide is something that needs to be addressed year-round, September is set aside annually as the month to really focus in on this difficult but very important topic. In just 2020 alone, nearly 46,000 lives were lost to suicide.

We encourage everyone to know the warning signs to watch for:

  • Increased alcohol and/or drug use

  • Aggressive behaviors

  • Withdrawal from friends, family and community

  • Dramatic mood swings

  • Uncommon impulsive or reckless behaviors

If you witness one ore more of the behaviors listed below, please contact 988 by call or text to seek immediate assistance:

  • Collecting and saving pills

  • Buying weapons

  • Giving away possessions

  • Tying up loose ends (like organizing personal papers or paying off debts)

  • Saying goodbye to friends or family, in person or online
